Draft Horse Clinic Level 1

Mountain Trail Clinics

This beginner class is perfect for those making their first foray into keeping, driving, farming and logging with draft horses. You'll meet us at our elk and horse farm in Middlebury Center, PA in the heart of the Pennsylvania Wilds, near historic Wellsboro and the Pine Creek Gorge (aka the "Pennsylvania Grand Canyon" ). We have seven teams of beautiful, well-trained Percheron draft horses that we use in our clinics. Our horses are working teams, and are quiet, but enthusiastic workers. We will provide meals as well as lodging at the historic Coach Stop Inn featuring clean comfortable rooms and an onsite restaurant We believe in hands-on learning, so you'll be working directly with our teams for this clinic.

We will cover the following skills in our Level 1 Workshop:

  • What to look for when buying a team
  • Basic horsemanship
  • Safe team handling
  • Learn the parts of the harness and how to fit it correctly
  • Harnessing and unharnessing safely and correctly
  • Long line handling
  • Ground driving
  • Log skidding
  • Safe hitching and unhitching - based on class and individual progress

At the end of the Level 1 Class, you should be able to handle, harness, hitch and ground drive a trained team safely.

Draft Horse Clinic Level 2

Mountain Trail Horse Clinics

This advanced class is the perfect follow-up to Level 1 or a great place for those that already own drafts to hone their skills. Mountain Trail has several teams of Percherons, allowing you to work with different teams, since no two are exactly alike. Learn advanced skills, practice your team handling techniques, skid logs and learn to drive one of our own wagons! Join us again in Middlebury Center, in the heart of the Pennsylvania Wilds.



We will cover the following skills in our Level 2 Workshop:

  • Advanced horsemanship
  • Handling spooking and shying
  • Driving a horse drawn vehicle
  • Log Skidding
  • Driving in public events
  • Plus even more time in the drivers seat to practice!
